The Wheeling Suspension Bridge, a National Historic Landmark, was the first bridge to cross the Ohio River. Built in 1849, the magnificent structure spans 1010 feet and was the longest bridge of its type in the world at the time of its construction.
It is still in use today.
This National Historic Landmark is the "birthplace of West Virginia." Built and used as a federal custom house, it was the site of the constitutional conventions that led to the "Restored Government of Virginia" (aligned with the union) from 1861-1863.
The first floor houses a permanent exhibit - "West Virginia: Born of the Civil War."
Each year, there is a "West Virginia" day celebration at Independence Hall to commemmorate the creation of the 35th state on June 20, 1863.
The Kruger Street Toy and Train museum is located in a Victorian-era schoolhouse. The museum offers a guided tour, interactive exhibits and an operating "O" gauge train layout.
The National Road in Wheeling passes through several historic districts, all of which boast outstanding examples of Victorian architecture.
Shop for West Virginia made crafts and glassware, then dine in the first floor restaurant. The Artisan Center building is an outstanding example of architecture and building reuse in Wheeling.
Oglebay Park and Resort is a 1600 acre municipal park located near the National Road. Travelers will find lodge and cabin accomodations, a fine restaurant, golf, shopping and a zoo for the children.
This Madonna is one of 12 located across the United States. Erected by the DAR in the late 1920's, these statues celebrate the pioneer women who traveled west across the Old Trails National Road.
Moses and Lydia Shepherd, whose mansion still stands, were credited with bringing the National Road to Wheeling. The former residence is now in private hands but can be viewed from the Road.
The U.S. Flag that is part of our banner at the top of the web site was the official national flag from 1795 - 1818. It contains 15 stars and 15 bars representing the addition of Vermont and Kentucky. This flag is often referred to as the Star Spangled Banner or the Fort McHenry Flag. It was our national flag at the time of the inception of the National Road.
